Shoe Store - I had to have a shoe store in my town. As much
as I disliked trying on shoes, the store itself was always interesting.
The store window with all the different styles of shoes accompanied by
colorful ads, made me want to go in. The building itself was a one-story
structure with cast concrete pilasters. The awning was a tin roof, held
up by metal rods. Building codes were a bit lax back then.
In the model, the pilasters are sintra, routed on the table saw to give
the sense of fluted columns; then painted a flat beige to look like cement.
The window frames are styrene strips painted dull silver and the awning
is real metal that was corrugated to scale. The brick is styrene that
is spattered painted with Krylon with the mortar bushed on by hand. Doing
brickwork is a very ZEN thing.
Shoe Store Interior
The shoe boxes are sintra with colored tape to represent
the lids. The wallpaper is a sheet of wrapping paper.
Drafting table and cabinet
Drafting table and cabinet - These details are from the interior
above the Bakery. I wanted to give the sense of the buildings being inhabited,
so I created an Architects office. The table and cabinet are made of basswood,
based on the actual furniture my Father gave me years ago.
