Back Seat Memories

by George Bojaciuk

Take your mind out of the gutter! This is about a little known fact concerning the FM ’63 Impala Coupe. It’s time to break the silence because up to now only a handful of people were aware of this little overlooked issue. It may also make the early release of the Impala soar in value.

FM 1963 Impala Seatback

In the early days of FM, if an error was discovered, a running change could be made. So was the case with the ’63 Impala Coupe. Early production models came with a standard Impala back seat. Why you ask? Well, from what I was told when I asked the question, was because they originally could not find a good example to photograph. So, they shot several cars and pieced the best of each together. What was missed, however, was the rear seat.

The car that was shot was a regular ’63 Impala and did not have the “SS rear speaker seat. The first models issued reflect this omission. When discovered at a later date, the rear seat speaker was added as a running change. Many later model had this change and it’s really unknown as to how many original speaker delete rear seats there are in circulation.

The convertible has the correct rear seat, as does the low rider version. I’ve included pictures of my model with the rear speaker delete. A sizeable contribution to my Chevelle resto fund will be the only way I part with this one. I’ve enclosed a shot of the convertible with the correct rear seat speaker. Maybe it’s time you crawled into your Impala’s back seat and took a gander. My educated guess is that there are more “correct” models out there than there are of the error version. To date, not many people are even aware that this error exists.
