Franklin Mint 1963 and 1957 Chevrolet Corvette

by by George S. Bojaciuk

At the time when Franklin Mint was considering creating a '63 Fiberglass Corvette, there were two additional colors being considered besides Silver. They were red and black, three replicas in these colors are known to exist. Red was rejected due to the fact that the previous release in diecast was red. The silver version won and was created.

Also, when the '57 Fiberglass Vette was up for review there was quite a debate on which color to recreate this replica in. My personal preference was a white bodied, silver cove, red interior version. I also had a black car painted. When I made my presentation, I had brought in the entire collection of early Vette’s and laid them all out to show the colors.

If Franklin Mint recreated this replica in red it would be competing with a previous red that was already on the market. Black would compete with the black '58 therefore in the end, red won. Looking closely at the '57 diecast in red, the color is not correct for that period. Signet red is the correct color as I recall? There was a debate that we should make it the same color as the previous version. By doing so we would not draw attention to the fact that the previous version was in fact an error. I had suggested that as long as we were doing the model in red, let's do it the correct shade. By creating the model in the correct shade of red it would set it apart from the previous one.

Due to the tight timing only 1 of each color was made.
