High School Memories...

We all have them you know your first date that first kiss no we won’t go any further than the kiss. We also had our first car, which played into us receiving that first kiss if you know what I mean? Remember that special car, the one that shined like no other we ever owned? The interior glistened without ever finding a speck of dust anywhere lord help the one who spilled anything on its interior. Every waking hour was spent on that car washing it, waxing it pampering it like nothing we ever owned before. Of course this was before we got that first kiss then all bets were off as our priorities changed in an instant.

Mine was a 1965 Ford Mustang coupe silver blue metallic with a red leather interior. By no stretch of the imagination would it ever be considered a muscle car, as it was a straight six with an automatic transmission. The girls however sure loved it and so did I?

So the series of models proposed by George Bojaciuk to management at the Mint could have flown easily. Especially to the baby boomers of today that love to relive their youth. Before I continue with this story I would like to go on record as saying the woman that I married received my first kiss, I swear. That’s my story and I am sticking to it.

George had the idea to create a series of models that would reflect High School Days. Something fun that would reflect a simpler time in our lives. Collateral material would have had neat tidbits from the era represented by the car. There were 3 cars to depict the '50's, '60's and '70's.

1951 Hudson

The first in the series was the '51 Hudson. George asked his good friend and model builder, Rick Hanmore to do the build. Rick has a penchant for the '50's feel so who best to undertake the project? Rick was given a '51 Hudson to work with and within 6 weeks Rick transformed that Hudson into quite a wild ride. Rick included accessories like 45's and bongo drums in the trunk making for a model that reflected the carefree times we all enjoyed.

By the way, to those that may not know, Rick he now enjoys employment, at the Danbury Mint, JSS Software is happy to call him our friend, also.

The second model recreated was a '65 Mustang in red that George built with a souped up engine. Accessories were to include headers, toolbox and drive up ramps.

1970 Chevrolet Chevelle

Finally, the third in the series was to be a '70 Chevelle SS454 recreated in black with white stripes. Accessories were to include a Hi-Test gas pump Island. “The Franklin Mint” did release this model as a “Limited Edition” but not as originally presented by George.

Unfortunately, the entire series had been killed; it never made it past management as presented. Therefore it was never introduced as a series, so much for the memories.

Where are they now? The Hudson is in Rick's private collection. It won an award at a model show and has been featured on the cover of Scale Auto. Both the Mustang and Chevelle are in George’s personal collection.
