The Original "Old Reliable"...

Yes Dorothy, there was another ‘Old Reliable’ before the junkyard truck. What a shame that The Franklin Mint rejected the idea, as this would have made another interesting model for those of us who love those old muscle cars that we grew up with enjoying everyone of them. Just listen can you hear that throaty muscle car noise as it rumbles by? I sure can they were a blast to drive and very easy to work on. Oh, how I long for those simple times when life was fun.

The original ‘Old Reliable’ was Dave Strickler's '63 Impala Z-11. The factory made up 6 color samples of the white car - 3 had black interiors and 3 had red interiors. As for the original car the interior wasn’t known, as references were scarce at the time. The Z-11 was a $1237 option in 1963 and it gave you a 427 cubic inch/ 430 hp engine. Only 100 cars were made. This model was to be part of a Nostalgia Drag Racing concept, which was presented, without much success.

The model needed to be changed to a non-SS versioned car since that was what Franklin Mint had at the time but the costs would be minimal. The plan was to do 12 cars with different drives and markings, one car to be showroom stock. All would be a limited edition of 2500 pieces. Drag cars would have different drag accessories added and the showroom stock car would have had a dealer showroom display case...it even had a receptionist filing her nails behind a desk!
