The final Run..

During the summer months of my youth I spent my weekends at the local drag strip not far from home hoping to get lucky. Get those minds out of the gutter, I meant getting down the ¼ mile in record-breaking speed. Alas, it never was meant to be. Getting down the strip that is.

I was impressed when I received this story, which contained a pair of drag racers sitting on the line waiting for the tree to go green. Talk about a flood of memories coming back to me. I can’t begin to tell you the sounds smell and yes girlfriends that were sparked when I began this story. I remembered them as if it was yesterday.

George Bojaciuk had a passion for drag racing also, commissioning Randy Moyer to do a drag Racing scene with two great racecar's. His idea was to recreate the excitement one has while waiting for the tree to go green therefore he wanted a diorama with two racers getting ready to launch. Viewing this diorama you can feel the excitement, hear the sounds of these great warriors ready for battle?

George loved the old stuff; the real muscle machines, which went head to head utilizing, shear horsepower to win. Therefore to give this project birth it was decided he would use a Bill Jenkins' '69 Camaro and the Sox and Martin 'Cuda’, both great muscle machines of the time deserving of a place in the diorama.

The Final Run

Talk about capturing the look and feel of the final run. You can hear the sound of motors revving the smell of high-octane aviation fumes that stagnate the air along with the stench of burnt rubber. Close your eyes sit back in your chair you will remember those sounds and smells just as I did, I promise, try it.

The Camaro, even with it's separate vinyl top, did not look bad when completed. However, when presented to the mint the concept didn't fly since no one got the idea. What did these two drag racers have to do with anything was the feeling? Comments made were, "...we need more color in the white car, can it be red?” Unfortunately this project sat on George’s desk for over a year with no interest shown by management. It was later returned to Randy Moyer since George’s policy is to return all models to their builders.

Randy and George made the car show rounds having Ronnie Sox and Bill Jenkins sign the drag strip base during their travels. As a bonus, Herb McCandless happened to be at a show where the restored car was being displayed and he too signed the base, Herb drove for Sox and Martin as well. There is only one known to exist what a shame I would buy it just for the memories. Thanks George.
