Posted - 04/26/2025 : 17:43:30 This picture brought back a fond flash memory. It was 1967-69, I was in high school, Fayetteville NC, home of Fort Bragg & Pope AFB. Steve's Drive In. Center kitchen and all cars parked around a perimeter circle. When parked all you had to place your order, just flash your headlights and the middle aged lady, Betty, would come to your car and take your order. I have lived around the world but their Pizzas where the best I every tasted. As a teenager, I couldn't buy beer and Betty would shine a flashlight at the cars with underage drinkers to let us know a police car or the military police were present. Like I said cars parked on the circle perimeter, and other cars just circled, and circled, cruising. High school people did not go to Steve's. Didn't mix with the young G.I's. But that was my hang out 3-4 times a week. Circle and circle, park, pizza and beer. My Air Force Colonial Dad forbid me to go to Seve's, don't mix with the young G.I.'s. Then one night in 1968, a young G.I., too much beer, pulled out and hit the side of my 1963 T-Bird as I was circling. Oh the drama. The police were called and then the military police called because my car had military officers tags. The military then called Dad so of course he had to get out of bed and come to Steve's. Buy now local police, MP's all on the scene for a T-Bird dented door. Have to give it to my Dad, he talked to the MP's, local police, and no charges filed against the young G.I. who hit my car. Dad had my T-Bird repaired and we never talked about it. I continued going to Steve's until 1969 when I left for college in Miami. Wonderful memories and I will always remember Betty and those pizzas.
